Modal Silk is widely famous as a craft from Surat, India and has spread all over the country. Although it was originally developed in Japan in 1950s and today, globally most of the modal is produces by Austrian company. Modal fabric is a bio-based fabric that is made from spinning beach tree cellulose into fibres which is completely biodegradable, so it technically is a sustainable textile. Modal is only made from the wood pulp of renewable beech tree and is generally considered an eco-friendlier alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water.
